A walk around Austin in late summer

This is a sample note. I wanted one piece that belongs to a place, because the site identity includes Austin and I do not want that to be only a line in the footer.
Late summer here is a negotiation. The day keeps the heat longer than it has any right to. You wait for a thinner hour — after six, sometimes after seven — when the sidewalks stop radiating and the live oaks look less like they are holding their breath.
The route I keep repeating
I leave the house without a destination that would survive a good question. Usually I drift toward a creek bed that is more limestone than water by August. Cicadas do the soundtrack. Someone is always grilling two streets over. A runner passes with the grim focus of a person who scheduled this walk in a calendar.
There is a stretch where the street grid loosens and the yards get older. The interesting houses are not the new ones. They are the ones that have decided, quietly, to keep their paint a year past when a realtor would have called.
I like cities that still have leftover space. Not vacant in the speculative sense — leftover in the sense that you can stand still without being in anyone’s way. Austin still has pockets of that, if you are willing to walk past the parts that were designed to be photographed.
What I notice when I am not trying
Heat makes attention narrower. You notice shade the way you notice a chair in a long museum. You notice who leaves a bowl of water on the porch. You notice that the sky does a brief, expensive gold and then gives up.
I do not take many pictures on these walks. The point is not to collect Austin. The point is to have one evening that is not a screen. If a sentence arrives, I write it down later. Most of them do not survive the next morning, which is fine. This site is for the ones that do.
Why a walk belongs in a public archive
A walk is a small essay that does not know it yet. It has a beginning, a turn for home, and a last observation that is usually about light. Publishing one is a way of saying: this city is not only a résumé line. It is also the weather I write in.
When you replace this sample, keep a place piece if you can. The archive will feel less like a blog template and more like a person who lives somewhere.
