Why I am writing in public

This is a sample note shipped with the site so the archive is not empty. Replace it, or set sample: false when you publish your own piece.

This is a sample essay. The point of shipping it is not to pretend a long archive already exists. It is to show what a finished note looks like on this site: a date, a title, a short excerpt on the home page, and a URL you can send to someone.

I have started more private documents than I have finished public ones. The private ones feel safer. They also disappear. A folder of drafts is not a conversation, and it is a poor memory. The public page is stricter. It asks for a title. It asks for a first sentence that can stand without me in the room.

What “public” means here

Public, for this site, is a low door. There is no account to create and no comment box waiting for a performance. A reader can open a note, finish it, and leave. If the piece is useful, they can copy the address and pass it on. That is the whole social layer in version one.

The constraint is the point. A file in the repository either has draft: true or it does not. If it does not, it is on the home page, in the RSS feed, and in the sitemap. The publishing act is a commit, not a dashboard.

A URL is a promise

A shareable URL is a small promise: this thought had a date, and it still lives at this path. I can change the sentences later. I should not change the address without a reason. People bookmark strangely. They text links into group chats that no one opens for a month.

That is also why the preview card matters. When a note leaves this site, it should still look like itself — title, description, a still image that belongs to the piece. A generic site logo is not enough.

How I want to use this

I want a place for pieces that are longer than a caption and shorter than a manifesto. Austin will leak into some of them. Work will leak into others. I am not trying to brand a beat in advance.

If you are reading this and you are me, later: replace the sample posts. Keep the habit. The site is only as serious as the next file you add under content/posts.
